Founders Supports Local Arts Camp
To help students expand their knowledge of the arts, Founders Federal Credit Union recently donated $500 to the Avant Garde Center for the Arts.

The donation helped support a local summer arts camp at the Mt. Dearborn United Methodist Church in Great Falls, South Carolina. Students participating in the camp studied areas of the visual arts. Camp instructors taught classes pertaining to pottery, painting, dance and music.

Founders Federal Credit Union was proud to sponsor with Avant Garde Center of the Arts and Great Falls Hometown Association to make this summer arts camp a success for the community of Great Falls.

Founders Rewards Students with Pizza Party
Founders Federal Credit Union recently hosted pizza parties for all students enrolled in our in-school credit unions.

Students enrolled at North Elementary, Brooklyn Springs Elementary, McDonald Green Elementary, Heath Springs Elementary inLancaster County, Ebenezer Avenue Elementary in York County and Cheraw Intermediate School in Chesterfield County all received pizza parties rewarding them for the great job they had done.  Students were entertained with pizza, drinks and Daniel the Spaniel, Founders Kids Club Mascot.

The in-school credit union branches teach students the value and importance of saving money.  Students are able to deposit money in their branch during the week on the day their in-school credit union is open.  Many prizes are given as incentives to encourage students to save their money throughout the school year.  For instance, when students, with their parent’s approval, join the credit union, they are given a gift with their initial deposit.  Once a $25 balance is reach in the students account, they become a member of the Daniel the Spaniel Club and receive a free customized t-shirt.

Students are encouraged to save their money over the summer, and can make deposits at any Founders office.  All in-school branches will be back in operation for the 2008-09 school year.

Founders Donates Ballistic Vest to Local Law Enforcement Agencies
In an effort to keep our police force safe, Founders Federal Credit Union donated ballistic (bullet proof) vest to each local law enforcement agency inLancaster and surrounding areas.

Founders is donating one ballistic vest to local law enforcement agencies in Lancaster, York, Chesterfield, Chester, Cherokee, Mecklenburg, Spartanburg and Laurens counties.  Presentations of the vests were conducted during National Law Enforcement Week.  Donated vests will be given to a local officer in need.  Today, Ballistic vests must be replaced every 5 years due to normal wear and tear and stricter law enforcement codes.

“We are excited to donate these vests to such deserving individuals,” said Bruce Brumfield, President and CEO of Founders.  “We’re proud to support our local law enforcement agencies and give back a small portion of what they have given to our communities.”

Founders Honors 2008 Laura Fleming Scholars
On Tuesday, May 13, 2008, Founders Federal Credit Union honored the 2008 Laura M. Fleming Scholarship recipients during the credit union’s Annual Meeting held at the Baxter Hood Center of York Technical College in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Four recipients were chosen from over 40 applicants.  The four recipients are Weslie Clark from Paul M. Dorman High School in Spartanburg, SC, Caroline Allen from South Pointe High School in Rock Hill, SC, Shannalee VanBeek from Porter Ridge High School in Indian Trail, NC and Angela Hendrix from New Covenant Christian School in Jefferson, SC.  Each recipient will receive $1,000 per year to attend the college or university of their choice.

The Laura M. Fleming Scholarship Fund was established by Founders Federal Credit Union in memory of its former President and CEO.  The purpose of the Scholarship Fund is to provide undergraduate scholarships to the children of Founders Federal Credit Union members to attend an accredited college, vocational or technical school of their choice.  It provides funding to gifted future leaders, in the spirit of Founders former leader.

“Like Laura, these future leaders possess determination and enthusiasm,” said Bruce Brumfield, President and CEO of Founders Federal Credit Union.  “They also have the motivation to achieve extraordinary results and live an extraordinary life, as did Laura Fleming.”

Founders Federal Credit Union donates $25,000 to March of Dimes. Together, We Can Make A Difference!
Founders Federal Credit Union proudly announces it’s Multi-Market Partnership with March of Dimes for the surrounding Chester, Chesterfield, Lancaster, Laurens, Spartanburg and York counties.

The partnership allows Founders to join with one of the most recognizable national health charities known for dedicating funds and time to benefit maternal and infant health.  Founders will donate $25,000 to the March of Dimes in 2008.  The donation places Founders as the first multi-market sponsor and one of the leading sponsors for the South Carolina Chapter.

“We are extremely excited about our new partnership,” stated Bruce Brumfield, President and CEO of Founders Federal Credit Union. “Having the chance to work hand in hand with an organization that has helped so many is a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

In addition to donating $25,000, Founders plans to participate in a local walk, provide a check/water station along the walk route and host the March of Dimes Kiddie Corner sponsored by Daniel the Spaniel Kids Saving Club.

Since 1970, March of Dimes has been organizing WalkAmerica, a fundraiser where volunteers participate by walking to raise funds to support the organization’s mission.  However, to better communicate their mission statement March of Dimes has decided to do some re-branding.  Starting in 2008 WalkAmerica will transition to March for Babies.

The March for Babies fundraiser has collected over $3 million in South Carolina alone.  For those who donate, 93 cents of every dollar contributed goes directly to fund the March of Dimes mission.  In the future, March of Dimes plans to have a cure that prevents any premature childbirths, birth defects and infant mortalities.

Founders Federal Credit Union is proud to join hands with March of Dimes to one day make this vision a reality.

Team Little Guy Completes Blue Ridge Relay Race, Raises More Than $70,000 for Micro Community Grants Program! (9/14/2007)

Team Little Guy successfully completed the Blue Ridge Relay Race in 30 hours & 14 minutes.
Team Little Guy, the 12-person running team composed of credit union staff and members, successfully completed the Blue Ridge Relay Race on Saturday, September 8th. The team completed the race in a little more than 30 hours – running through the night Friday to reach Asheville on early Saturday afternoon.

"All the runners on the team did an outstanding job," said NCCUL EVP/COO Eric Gelly, "and we’re excited that this effort will support the very worthy recipients of Micro Community Grants in both Carolinas."

Credit unions and credit union organizations in the Carolinas contributed more than $70,000 to benefit the Micro Community Grants program of the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation. Micro Community Grants are donations to community organizations and charities that support causes consistent with the credit union philosophy of "people-helping-people".

"The efforts of Team Little Guy will support some truly wonderful organizations in the Carolinas," said CCUF Executive Director John Slack. Slack noted that past recipients, "include homeless shelters, free clinics, group homes and Boys and Girls Clubs. These organizations are doing a wonderful job helping people help themselves. Credit unions care about the communities they operate in, and Micro Community Grants are a helpful tool for helping those in need."

Even as credit unions stepped up to support the good works of the Micro Community Grants, Team Little Guy reached the BRRR finish line through a lot of hard work. The race started at 7:45 am Friday at Grayson Highlands State Park and over the next 30 hours, TLG worked its way down the Blue Ridge Mountains. "Most of the team got at most a couple of hours of sleep from Friday morning until Saturday evening," said Gelly.

Despite the rigorous race, no one had any major problems. "A few of us got blisters on our feet and one runner had some knee problems at the end, but everyone successfully completed their portion of the race," said Gelly.

TLG member Esteve Coll-Larrosa crossed the finish line with his teammates in Asheville at 1:56 pm Saturday. TLG finished 33rd out of 46 teams in the race, posting an average of 8 minutes and 43 seconds per mile. "We weren’t trying to win by any means, just raise money and have fun," Gelly noted. The winning team completed the course in a little more than 23 hours.

The Team Little Guy concept evolved from CUNA’s Little Guy campaign. The CUNA campaign is designed to reach Congressional staffers in Washington, DC, but some credit unions and Leagues have adopted the Little Guy as a helpful reminder of who credit unions serve.

To spread the word, a Team Little Guy blog was created in late June. The blog has generated more than 11,000 page views since it launched. The blog’s success gave many team members a chance to share information about the Little Guy and credit unions during the race. "People came up to us all through the race and let us know they saw the blog and really enjoyed it," said Slack, who drove one of the two support vans during the race. "It was a great conversation starter for the team to talk about credit unions and the people who are served by them."

Even as the team heals its blisters and aches, plans are being made to return in 2008, perhaps with more credit union presence. "We’d like to see other credit union running teams organize and join us next year," remarked Gelly. "It’s a fun event and a great way to support the Foundation."
